Tesla Avoids Production Slump in “Exceptionally Difficult” Quarter

In a quarter marred by supply chain interruptions and a brief factory closure in Shanghai due to China’s strict zero-Covid policy, Tesla managed to avoid a production slump in the first three months of 2022. The world’s largest electric car maker built 305,407 vehicles last quarter, up 68 percent from Q1 2021 and virtually unchanged from Q4 2021.

It was an “exceptionally difficult” quarter for Tesla according to CEO Elon Musk, who thanked the Tesla team and key suppliers for saving the day. In fact, Tesla delivered a record number of 310,048 vehicles during the first three months of 2022, just beating its previous best of 308,600 set in Q4 2021.

As the following chart shows, Tesla ramped up its production capabilities significantly over the past few years. Having built 254,530 cars in 2018, the company looks certain to pass the one million milestone this year after missing it by 70,000 cars in 2021.

This chart shows Tesla’s quarterly vehicle production.
