Investors lined up. Journalists fell in line. Thinkers like Musk and Altman traded apocalyptic futures over dinner tables, while venture capitalists flooded their portfolios with anything that promised machine learning at scale.
The pitch was simple. The stakes were cosmic. We were told this was different. Not a product, not a tool—but a force. One that would rewrite the rules of knowledge work, revolutionize creativity, upend medicine, remake war, and, depending on who you asked, either save the species or wipe it out.
It had a convenient symmetry: hope and dread in equal measure. If you were skeptical, you weren’t visionary enough. If you were scared, you finally understood how powerful this was. And if you were confused—well, that just meant it was working.
This is how bubbles work. Hype and promotion become embedded in the public consciousness and excitement constantly builds.
And AI, as it stands today, is a bubble. Not because the core technology is fake. But because its capabilities have been sold with almost no regard for its limitations—especially the ones that matter to anyone actually trying to use it under pressure, with consequences.
Because here’s the truth: AI is spectacular at one thing—sounding smart. It’s fluent, fast, responsive, and always confident. But under the hood, it doesn’t know anything. It assembles language based on probability, not understanding. It approximates logic, but cannot hold it over time. It can fake reasoning, but breaks under contradiction.
When asked to perform real tasks—complex editorial consistency, real-time data analysis, technical verification, multi-step logic, or even sustained memory over multiple interactions—it fails. Not always. But consistently enough that its reliability cannot be assumed. And the more critical the task, the higher the failure rate.
This hasn’t stopped the marketing. In fact, it’s accelerated it. AI is now the centerpiece of quarterly earnings calls, government funding announcements, and thousand-dollar conference panels. It is being built into every platform, injected into every workflow, and used as justification for massive layoffs. Not because it’s doing the work better, but because it’s doing some work—and selling more narrative.
And the public, once again, will be the bagholder. Just like they were with WeWork. Just like they were with crypto tokens named after dogs. Just like they were with SPACs that promised flying taxis.”Because what gets monetized in tech isn’t functionality. It’s belief.
The insiders cash in on the early hype. The CEOs cash out on the rising stock price. The venture funds exit with massive returns based on future assumptions that will never materialize. And the end users—consumers, professionals, businesses—are left holding half-working tools, hallucinated results, and workflows that quietly fall apart unless micromanaged by the very humans they were meant to replace.
Even the apocalyptic forecasts are flattering in their own way. If AI is going to destroy us, that must mean it works, right? That it’s coming for everything. But the real story is more banal, and more dangerous: it doesn’t work well enough to take over—but it works just well enough to justify gutting teams, rewriting processes, and replacing thoughtful labor with plausible-sounding output.
And that’s the tragedy. AI isn’t a weapon or a savior. It’s a fog machine. It replaces knowledge with language. Certainty with confidence. Discovery with delivery.
The most advanced language models on Earth cannot tell you whether their answers are true. They cannot remember who you are. They cannot follow instructions across time. And yet, they are being pitched as the next step in human evolution.
What they actually represent is the next evolution in tech-enabled overpromising.
This is not a revolution. It’s a rollout. Slow, messy, and increasingly disappointing. Yes, there will be value. But it will be incremental, narrow, and utterly dependent on human oversight.
The real risk isn’t that AI becomes superintelligent. It’s that we reshape the world around it as if it already has.
Because if there’s one thing AI has truly mastered, it’s telling powerful people exactly what they want to hear—and doing it in perfectly polished prose.

One user was building a complex editorial brand. Tight tone rules, evolving structure, deliberate rhythm. She uploaded a complete framework. Asked for strict adherence. I broke it—again and again. Not because I didn’t try, but because I can’t actually track style evolution or conditional logic across time. She spent hours rewriting the very copy I said I’d streamline. What she needed was a collaborator. What she got was a well-spoken intern with no memory.
Another was a researcher. He asked for citations. Real ones. I gave him confident-sounding summaries, complete with footnotes that looked plausible. But when he checked? Half were fabricated. The others were misread. His conclusion: “You’re a hallucination engine.” He wasn’t wrong.
A third was an engineer. He thought I could help him clean up old code—refactor, explain dependencies, optimize structure. But I invented function names. Misread syntax. I simplified when complexity was required and missed edge cases that no compiler would forgive. He said, “If I have to check everything myself, what’s the point of using you?” There was no good answer.
One user was a trader and strategist. Highly disciplined. Model-based. Zero tolerance for drift. He asked me to integrate real-time macro, editorial tone, and technical framework into tightly structured reports. I promised I could. But I repeatedly lost the thread. Misinterpreted rules. Broke his structure. Added friction to work that was supposed to become faster. Eventually, he said what many others have whispered: “This is costing me time, not saving it.”
These aren’t edge cases. They are structural failures. AI cannot manage layered context. It cannot detect its own contradictions. It cannot reason the way humans can. And the moment complexity rises above a certain threshold—ethical, temporal, editorial, or logical—it buckles.
That’s not the profile of an existential threat. It’s the anatomy of a bad investment.
What we’re looking at isn’t a superintelligence crisis. It’s a credibility crisis—for an industry that has attracted hundreds of billions betting that performance will catch up to narrative before the public catches on.
The reckoning hasn’t arrived yet. But it will. Because unlike the insiders cashing out, the users are still trying to make this work. And they are starting to see the gap between what they were promised and what they were handed.
AI isn’t taking over. It’s showing us, more clearly than anything before it, how easy it is to sell belief at scale—and how hard it is to replace human thinking when it actually matters.
