How Popular Is Uber Around the World?

The Guardian broke a story earlier today dubbed the ‘Uber files’, an international scandal involving high profile politicians such as French President Emmanuel Macron and the world-known taxi hailing service. According to some 124,000 files, leaked also to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and BBC Panorama, the company broke laws, duped police, exploited violence against drivers and lobbied governments as it grew from a startup to a global competitor between 2013-2017. In light of this breaking story, we’re taking a look at just how popular the app has become around the world.

As our chart shows, Uber has gained traction across several continents. India and Brazil take the lead in terms of the selected for the Global Consumer survey, with 43 percent and 42 percent of surveyed respondents, respectively. Meanwhile, in the U.S., nearly one in five people said they used the app in the past 12 months. The figures are somewhat lower in European countries, aside from the UK, with only 10 percent of French and 3 percent of German respondents saying that they used it.
