Delta Variant Gains Dominance Around the World

The rapid spread of the Delta variant is continuing, with the COVID-19 virus mutation now being the dominant strain in many countries around the world.

Data platform GISAID shows how critical the situation in Denmark is at the moment. The local health departments registered almost 13,000 infections with the dangerous Delta variant in the past four weeks, the third highest in an analysis of 80 countries and territories. This corresponds to almost 97 percent of all infections during this time period. Only the UK – where the Delta variety has been spreading for months – and the U.S. counted more infections with the variant over this time period. While almost all new infections in the UK were with the Delta variant, that number was at around 88 percent in the U.S.

Other countries where almost all new infections were with the Delta variant included Germany, Singapore and Russia. For the around 117 countries and territories analyzed by GISAID, the Delta variant made up more than half of all new infection in the past four weeks in 57 and more than 90 percent of new infections in 35.

This chart shows the number of Delta variant infections in the previous four weeks and share of total new COVID-19 infections in selected countries (as of Aug 2. 2021).
