Falling from furloughed to unemployed

A Resolution Foundation survey of UK workers furloughed in the coronavirus crisis has revealed the share that have subsequently lost their jobs entirely. As this infographic shows, 9 percent of people put temporarily out of work by their employers have since ended up unemployed.

When breaking down the results by demographic however, we can see which groups have been worst affected by such a scenario. BAME workers and those aged 18-24 have disproportionately fallen from furlough to unemployment – 22 percent and 19 percent, respectively.

Commenting on the results, Kathleen Henehan, Senior Research and Policy Analyst at the Resolution Foundation, said: “The true nature of Britain’s jobs crisis is starting to reveal itself”, adding: “Worryingly, fewer than half of those who have lost their jobs during the pandemic have been able to find work since. This suggests that even if the public health crisis recedes in a few months’ time, Britain’s jobs crisis will be with us for far longer.”

This chart shows the share of furloughed workers in the UK that have since lost their jobs entirely.
