VW’s common-sense 282 mpg diesel tandem car. I highly agree, battery-powered cars are a bad idea (the energy source is too heavy), and petroleum is a great mobile energy source, we just need to use much less of it, in waaaaaaaaay lighter cars. Many of us buzzed around in cars that got 35-40mpg, 30 years ago; it’s not rocket science.
The VW L1 (so-named for the goal of 100km/liter of fuel) weighs 600 pounds, and is powered by an 8.5hp diesel. Suspect it will achieve highway speeds, due to very small frontal area, but may be distinctly VW bus-like on the climbs (almost exactly same power/weight ratio as the old split-window buses).
