Shilling stays bearish – surprisingly easy on Japan

Does all this mean that the land of the rising sun is slowly sinking into the sunset? Is Japan finished as a major economy? Hardly. Despite her flat GDP per capita since 1995 and fall in relation to that of the U.S. by 40%, Japan remains a wealthy country (Chart 14, page 6). In 2010, her GDP per capita was still ahead of that in France, Germany, the U.K. and Italy (Chart 15, page 6). And China’s economy is now larger than Japan’s because her huge population, 1.3 billion compared to 127 million in Japan, overcame China’s low $4,383 GDP per capita, which was only 10% of Japan’s $42,873. China is a population giant compared to Japan but a pigmy in terms of living standards.

Tough People : The Japanese are tough people and will probably rebuild their economy in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami.
