US uses more oil than next four countries combined…


World’s “top” oil users (million barrels/day):
US 18.8
China 8.3
Japan 4.4
India 3.1
Russia 2.7

World’s top producers:

Russia 9.9
Saudis 9.7
US 9.1

Total global production is 85.5 MBD, and we use 22% of it. 2/3rds of our use is for transportation. Seems obvious that if we 1) all switch back to driving Fiestas (awesome handbrake turns) and Datsun B-210s, and 2) figure out light rail, we can get finally leave the Middle East.

Interesting tidbit: a bit less than half of our ‘oil production’ is from NG products.
