Mundane Reason for Big Fed Add – WSE Pro

The Fed added a huge $13.75 billion net to the system today as Fed Funds surged back to the 5.25% area. While that looks scary on the surface, there’s a mundane explanation for it. Federal tax collections came out of bank accounts today, dramatically reducing reserves. The Treasury is doing $60 billion in TIOs to temporarily restore those funds, but in the meantime, the Fed had to boost reserves for a day. The effects on the stock market have been nil.
