You really did have — for the first time in 80 years — the initial signs of a classic panic. Everybody knew we were looking at the abyss. Treasury Secretary GeithnerBut, whether the US likes it or not, the dollar reserve system is fraying; the question is only whether we move from the current system to an alternative in a haphazard way, or in a more careful and structured way. Poverty Smoke and Mirrors
The state Ministry of Truth (MoT) has new poverty data out that is worth passing on for laughs or whatever. According to the MoT’s Census Bureau , the poverty rate climbed to 13.2 percent from 12.5 percent, and the number of people classified as poor jumped by 2.6 million to 39.8 million. How’d They DO That? – Professional Edition Fed Report
The Treasury market laughed in the face of having to pay for $55 billion of new intermediate and long term paper on Tuesday 9/15. That combined with the reduction in the Fed’s subsidy of this market, due to end on October 31, should have hurt the market, but instead there was a buying panic. Hiccup?
I have been using gasoline demand as an indicator of consumer spending. For whatever reason (hiccup?) there was a pickup on this front around the Labor Day period. I translate this to mean that there was a corresponding improvement in retail, hotels, and restaurants as well. With all the Gumnut distortions in the markets, this View the full article

Last Ditch Chance – Professional Edition
The market has reached a last ditch resistance line. If they break through this line with intermediate indicators turning up, it would suggest a major extension of this move. If the rally is halted here, the bears would have a shot at a reversal, but not a guarantee. Click here to download complete report in pdf format (Professional Edition Subscribers). More Faulty Credit Ratings: Is the USA a AAA?
This chart here should illustrate just how fundamentally poor the US bubble based economy has been in the last 10 years. In fact it has been so weak, that really not a single new job has been created in that time frame. To thinking people this should also lead to a fundamental question, should an View the full article

Weight of the World On Bears’ Shoulders – Professional Edition
As the averages test the highs, major channel lines lie just above. If they get through those lines, the next resistance levels are significantly higher. The upturn would also result in a set of failed sell signals on a variety of intermediate indicators, typical of early stage rampaging bull markets. Bears have a lot on their shoulders tomorrow and over the next few days. Click here to download complete report in pdf format (Professional Edition Subscribers). Revolution is in the Air, Again
Capitalism is an evil, and you cannot regulate evil. You have to eliminate it and replace it with something that is good for all people and that something is democracy. Michael MooreThe current international monetary system, with flexible exchange rates between the major currencies, the dollar as the main international reserve currency, and free international capital flows, has failed to achieve
Ben and China – the deal is done?
There are two stories that I’ve posted in my feed (the link at the navigation bar) – one is that China just made a bold statement about Ben printing money and another that monetary aggregates just turned into freefall mode (i.e. we are witnessing the start of the classic deflationary spiral).
What to make of that?
Dear Professor Krugman
Paul Krugman had a lengthy piece in the Times over the weekend–something to the effect of what’s wrong with the economics profession. Having the attention span of a gnat, I could not even begin to read the whole thing, but I did manage to get through a couple of paragraphs when I got to one that forced me to stop and read no further. Instead, I shot off the following email to Professor K., who doesn’t seem like a bad guy to me. His biggest problem is that he’s an economist. What an embarrassment that must be. I’m glad I’m not an economist.
Anyway, here’s the email.

Extra Cash for Bills and Stocks, Not for Notes
Treasury auctions have seen record or near record bid/cover ratios this week, thanks in part to $16 billion in bill paydowns. That cash also boosted stocks. But longer term Treasuries sagged as the market faces the settlement of $55 billion of new intermediate and long term supply on Monday 9/14. Indirect bidding was a little weaker this week, resuming a trend that began more than a month ago. Click here to download complete report in pdf format (Professional Edition Subscribers). The SPX heads for a test of the recent highs with some key indicators suggesting that the test will fail. On the other hand we have seen sell signals fail to “work” time and again in recent months. Fed Report Update
The Treasury sold 13 week and 26 week bills and 3 year notes on Tuesday, and announced the 4 week bill to be auctioned Wednesday. Bid/cover ratios were high but lower than last week’s hysterical panic levels at the bill auctions. One week does not a reversal make, but a trend of reduced bid/covers could be a harbinger of doom for the Fed and Treasury’s shell game, and hence for the financial markets.
The bid/cover on the 3 year note was slightly higher than at last month’s auctions. However, in all 3 cases the indirect bid was down significantly from the last auctions of the same paper. That could be significant as it continues a gradual trend that began a couple of months ago.
